Warm Wedding at Zingerman's

You see lots of outdoor weddings on blogs and in magazines, because they are beautiful, also because natural light makes for some awesome photos. But as someone whose wedding took place in a church and a restaurant, I know that the experience of an indoor wedding is no less special. And as these shots from Sarah and Stephen’s celebration prove, you can end up with some pretty great photos…



Sarah’s bouquet was wrapped in a piece of the wedding gown that both her grandmother and mother wore, and wore a hair comb embellished with beads from their dress.

The church ceremony was followed by an intimate dinner: “We wanted to celebrate our life in Ann Arbor with family and friends. We are also both from Michigan, so using local and Michigan vendors was really important to us. We had been looking for an intimate location that would make our reception feel like a big family dinner. The space perfectly suit our group and was so beautiful complimented our neutral vision perfectly. Zingerman’s also has amazing food and service, and they were a pleasure to work with!”
Guests were invited to sign Jenga pieces instead of a guest book – how the brilliant idea is!




Strings of party lights make a cheerful, warm glow over the entire dinner – and made for some incredible indoor photos!

The Wedding

Terrain at Styers is a garden that foodie dreams are made of and quite possibly the coolest spot on the planet for a wedding extravaganza. And as if the venue weren’t enough to send us reeling into a swoon-fest, this pretty number is also sporting gobs of whimsical details and a lovely homespun quality crafted. We will spare you from all of our gushing and instead, let the beautiful images do the talking. Believe us, they have a beautiful story to tell. From the Bride…Instead of making ourselves crazy over every detail, we chose vendors and venues consciously that expressed our shared wedding vision. So, before we were even engaged, we booked place because it celebrates the beauty of nature, providing the perfect backdrop for our relaxed and romantic ceremony and reception.
At 6PM, guests with champagne in hand gathered at an Indian temple in the main of Terrain’s lush grounds to bear witness to our marriage. My father officiated and his deeply personal and humorous delivery struck a perfect balance, setting the tone for the rest of the evening’s events. Following the ceremony, the cocktail hour featured seasonal hors d’oeuvres and our selection of wines and beers (TIP: if your venue allows you to BYOB, do it!). Who doesn’t love a Hoegaarden with curry quinoa cakes in the evening? As if that wasn’t enough, our friend Haley Harmon of Don’t Eat the Paintings created a beautiful watercolor painting of our signature cocktail called “Pucker Up” featuring lemonade, pomegranate, and lavender-infused vodka made by my sister, Hannah.
Another reason we booked Terrain (maybe the main reason) is the food. The philosophy of Terrain’s café and Executive Chef Keith Rudolph is to create menus featuring seasonal ingredients from local farmers. To keep it casual, we choosed for a buffet-style dinner, served in the greenhouse-inspired café. Dining under hanging flowers, vines and twinkling garden lights was as delicious as it was romantic. After dinner, the party moved outside to the café terrace for dessert and dancing under the stars. In 2010, I started a baking company, coco love homemade, so we created a delectable dessert buffet featuring coco love whoopies, cookies, and button pies. Friends also pitched in and baked their favorites to help round out the selection (it was my wedding day after all!). Before we met, Jonathan and I both collected vintage cake stands and plates. We used our best cake stands and created some new of our own to display all the treats. Jonathan curated the festive installation inside Terrain’s ‘mushroom hut’ using this collection. We couldn’t imagine to have an outdoor space like the café terrace without allowing guests to make s’mores over a glowing fire pit, under a starry sky.
